Something similar...Falling off the chair laughing. Something similar happened to me way back in the 70s when I had a rather racy ex-half ton cup challenger. The gear and throttle levers were designed to be removable so that they didn't tangle up with sheets and control lines in the cockpit. Approaching a marina berth in Guernsey, I grabbed the gear lever and jerked it into astern - the lever came out of its socket, slipped out of my cold, wet hand, flew over the transom and was lost in the water. I had to do several circuits of the marina, stern first, before we found a large screwdriver that fitted the socket and enabled progress in a forward direction.
